Snowflake Challenge #1

Challenge #1: The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm Independence1776, Indy for short. I've been in fandom since 2003 and am very much a Fandom Old. (The things I have seen, Gandalf.) I don't have any patience for gatekeeping and bad behavior; I believe in "don't like, don't read." I tend to be gen focused and I like hurt/comfort and whump. I also really love canon divergent AUs.

I updated my profile and pinned post, mostly to say I’m no longer in Tolkien fandom. That is incredibly weird for me to say, much less think, because I’ve been in it for most of my life in fandom. But I’m not anymore. I’m still a part of Star Wars fandom— there are fics I absolutely want to finish writing and to write— but I’m also very quiet there. I've read a lot more published books than fic recently. It’s a strange place for me to be in, both in fandom and not in fandom at the same time.

As far as Snowflake goes, what I'm hoping to get out of it is to feel less disconnected with fandom and maybe start figuring out my place in it as I am now and not who I was in the past.

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

First, here's my blog introduction post from a Snowflake challenge two years ago.

So, I wanted to do this challenge again because I want to be more active here and also learn to use DW as a blog as I'm not very familiar with this platform. Or, I was a LJ blogger, but that was a long time ago.

I also want to page where I can journal about my fannish activities in the Tolkien/Silmarillion fandom. Tumblr is too chaotic for that. And some of my fandom friends also have a DW blog, I want to become a more active commenter.

Let's see how it goes this year!

Binx, Gus-gus, and Dumpling

I have taken the odd photo of the foster-kittens with my proper camera, but most of my photos are terrible phone snaps & short videos which aren't improved by my taking photos indoors in December.  Still, the camera you have with you is a better camera than the one you don't.

Gus-gus is the slightly larger kitten with a longer tail, and Dumpling is the kitten with a white tuft under her chin. We think that Gus-gus is male and Dumpling female, but wouldn't want to bet on it.

Here they are growing from 2 weeks to the end of 6 weeks : photos.app.goo.gl/qWiK9rMuBWHCA25U9

New year

Happy New Year 2026!

For some time, I've felt like that fic writing won't come as easily to me as before, and I've allowed myself to not write if I feel like it. After S&D 2025, there was actually a month when I didn't write anything, but then I returned writing with a new chapter for my FCL-Silm crossover, and an entry for a SWG monthly challenge, Cinnamon Rolls, which is romantic fluff about Mairon/Eönwë. (I decided there are too few fics about that pairing.)

As the New Year was approaching, I felt ready to take a break from my writing hobby, content to be reading fic instead, but the SWG challenge prompts did it again: I found myself starting a new fic already today.

It's nothing much, only a short entry for one of the last year's SWG monthly challenges I can still pick as New Year's Resolution amnesty, but it's about Maedhros, whom I don't write very often even though he's one of my favourite characters, and it feels like Maedhros might give me a fresh start for this writing year.
