Happy New Year 2026!

For some time, I've felt like that fic writing won't come as easily to me as before, and I've allowed myself to not write if I feel like it. After S&D 2025, there was actually a month when I didn't write anything, but then I returned writing with a new chapter for my FCL-Silm crossover, and an entry for a SWG monthly challenge, Cinnamon Rolls, which is romantic fluff about Mairon/Eönwë. (I decided there are too few fics about that pairing.)

As the New Year was approaching, I felt ready to take a break from my writing hobby, content to be reading fic instead, but the SWG challenge prompts did it again: I found myself starting a new fic already today.

It's nothing much, only a short entry for one of the last year's SWG monthly challenges I can still pick as New Year's Resolution amnesty, but it's about Maedhros, whom I don't write very often even though he's one of my favourite characters, and it feels like Maedhros might give me a fresh start for this writing year.

Details here on Bluesky.

I was a [community profile] b2mem mod when we were making the switch from LJ to DW, and we were careful about making sure that everything on the LJ side got copied over and/or backed up. (There were a few people who specifically didn't want their b2mem entries copied over to DW, and we respected that.) On the personal side, I'm vaguely nostalgic about some old role-playing accounts, but I don't care enough to back them up.

Resolution - annual SWG amnesty challenge - 1 January through 15 February 2026

A new year often brings resolutions to achieve big changes. Our Resolutions challenge is much more moderate: reach for a creative achievement, no matter how small. Maybe it is a single drabble, a sketch, or a new chapter—the point is to begin a new year with an act of creativity and imagination!

Our annual amnesty allows you to pick from any of the previous year’s challenges. You do not need to use a new prompt to be eligible for this challenge. Participants can choose to complete any of the previous year's challenges. Did you miss a challenge you wanted to complete? Do it now. Did you start a fanwork for a challenge but never completed it? Here is your chance to finish. If you didn't leave any unrealized or unfinished projects behind you (congratulations!), choose from any of our 2025 challenges and start something new.

You can find the complete amnesty challenge guidelines and a list of 2025's challenges here.

You will receive a stamp on your 2025 collection for any challenges that you complete now, as well as a stamp for the New Year's Resolution challenge on your 2026 collection. When you post to the SWG archive, please make sure you select the 2025 challenge you're completing and the New Year's Resolution challenge.

This month's banner and stamps use images from the 18th-century “Chinese Arabesques” by Jean-Baptiste Pillement and Anne Allen, which plays with the theme of striving to reach the fantastical.

In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 15 February 2026. For complete challenge guidelines, see the Challenges page on our website.

Happy New Year! All the best for 2026

Thank you very much for your engagement with this community over the last month!

This month, I am bringing back the challenge we had in January 2023:

The thematic prompt is: "lamp or lantern".

There are many lamps in the Legendarium!
Starting from the Two Lamps, Ormal and Illuin, and the silver lamp on top of the Mindon Eldaliéva in Tirion, all the way to lamps in Lothlórien in the Lord of the Rings and onwards.

Some bonus prompts from Tolkien's verse (filched from Tolkien Gateway):

till his blue lamp magic-kindled, where flow the shadowy rills
beneath enchanted alders, found that Gate beneath the hills
(From: The Lay of the Fall of Gondolin)

Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!
(From: Lord of the Rings)

O! the swinging lamps in the starlit globes
(From: Goblin Feet)

The formal challenge is a type of short poem of five lines also called "Lantern" or "Lanterne" (or "Lanturne"), because its shape is like that of a hanging lantern or lamp, when it is centre-aligned on the page.
The syllable count is 1-2-3-4-1.

Here are lanterne poems written for the challenge in January 2023:
Silmarils, by Narya:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/50308.html
Lamp, by elennalore:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/50640.html
Starlight, by Starspray:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/51138.html
Seven Lanterns, by Zdenka:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/51275.html
An Unexpected Find, by Anérea:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/51839.html
Waiting, by Silver Trails:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/52831.html

As always, the two prompts can be filled entirely independently or combined with prompts from other challenges.

Usual reminder that although you can fill the prompts in any way you like, in order to post the fill to this community or to the related collection on AO3 (linked in a sticky post at the top), the fanwork can only have a word count up to 1000 words and must be linked to a Tolkien fandom.
Rec lists and podfics can be posted as fills for thematic prompts, as long as the fanworks concerned meet those conditions.

Also we continue to welcome other pieces unrelated to any challenge, of course, including cross-posts and older stories!

Signups are now open!

Please consult the tagset for the list of fandoms and relationships you can request and offer. If you can't find a canon you nominated, make sure to check Uncategorized Fandoms, which is where fandoms will be listed if they haven't appeared on AO3 yet or if I've had to alter the canonical tag.

Important: While the Relationships field on the signup form has a dropdown that, when you start typing, should connect with the tagset, AO3 always doesn't display all nominated relationships for a fandom. If the relationship you're trying to request/offer is in the tagset but not appearing as a selection that you can make, please copy-paste it directly from tagset into your signup form. This will let the system recognize that it's the same tag.

Remember, Character A & Character B is platonic, Character A/Character B is romantic/sexual.

There's a letters post, if you want to link your letter there, and you'll also be able to browse requests either on AO3 or the app.

Signups will be open until January 7, 11:59PM EST. Please see the signup rules here.

You can comment here or contact the mod email--candyheartsex at gmail dot com--if you have any questions.

These letters are optional, and your creator isn't obligated to adhere to them (though they must abide by any do-not-wants listed in your actual signup), but they can provide helpful extra details--prompts, general likes, descriptions of how you see the requested relationships, etc.

Please do not post a link to your letter here unless it is complete and unlocked.

Farewell, 2025!

There's an odd duality to 2025 in that, while the year has been a very bad one for my country and for the world in general, it's been kind to me: I adopted my wonderful cat, went from a bad work situation to an excellent one, and moved into a much better apartment. So on a personal level, I'm looking back on the year fondly and hoping for more of the same in 2026, even as I fervently hope the coming year will be dramatically different on the broader scale.

Reading-wise, I was fortunate enough to pick up some real gems this year:

- I've already talked about A Canticle for Leibowitz here: it's a classic for a reason, and I think a good read for these times. Brilliant, moving, dark but never grim.

- Spiderlight, by Adrian Tchaikovsky, was recommended to me by [personal profile] fiona15351, whose taste is, as usual, excellent - this book is exquisite! Fiona described it as “a Last Unicornesque takedown of D&D alignments, with spiders” and noted that “there’s also a fireball-happy wizard.” The last is because she knows what I like - surprising exactly no one, Penthos was in fact my favorite character. One of the things I found structurally interesting about Spiderlight is that this is a book that doesn’t rely at all on surprise. I would go so far as to say nothing that happens is really surprising to the reader (though it definitely is to the characters!). Seeing things coming does not lessen their impact - if anything, it enhances it. I wouldn’t recommend Spiderlight to someone who hasn’t read a lot of fantasy, because much of the appeal lies in how Tchaikovsky plays with familiar tropes; I think at least some familiarity with the genre is required for full effect. But for someone who does have that familiarity, it’s a delight and I can’t recommend it more highly.

- I read Barbara Hambly's Windrose Chronicles books - the duology of The Silent Tower and The Silicon Mage, the sequel Dog Wizard, and Stranger at the Wedding, which isn't strictly speaking in the series but is in the same universe - and was immediately obsessed. I'd been dubious going in - '80s portal fantasy isn't something I'd have generally considered my cup of tea - but I really like a lot of Hambly's other works, so I gave it a try, and I'm so glad I did! This rocketed up the list to become one of my favorite book series ever, immediately. I love the wizard tropes, love the themes Hambly explores here (some of which are familiar from others of her books), and I even - unusually for me - really enjoy the romance between the protagonists, who are two extremely intelligent and pretty strange individuals meeting, perhaps for the first time, someone else who is operating on the same wavelength.

- Better late than never - this year was the first time I read anything by Jane Austen! I read Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion, at Fiona's urging, and definitely preferred the latter. (The yearning! Marvelous!)

- Other highlights included Ann Leckie's Translation State, which was excellent and may be my favorite Leckie yet, and Le Guin's short story collection The Compass Rose, out of which I loved best "The Author of the Acacia Seeds" and "Mazes."

I didn't write much this year - outside of work, at least. I posted two fics, one for the Silmarillion and one for Star Wars, both as part of exchanges and both written before I transferred to my current bureau in mid-May, so to the extent I predicted I might be writing more after the switch, I was wrong; the same goes for being more active here on DW. The day job has just kept me really busy, but it's the good, worthwhile kind of busyness.

So farewell, 2025, with gratitude for the good things you brought. And here's to the new year: May it be kinder than the last.

Fandom/Relationship Promo Post

If you want to promote your fandom or the relationships you want to request/create for, this post is for you!

How you write your your recommendations, enthusiastic squeeing, or manifestos is up to you, but please put the name of your canon in the subject line of your comment. Here--with liberal borrowing from Yuletide's promo setup--are some other things you may want to include:

  • Title
  • Medium (e.g., Book Series, Podcast, TV Show, etc.)
  • Approximate Length (e.g., page count, runtime, etc. This is also a good place to mention if only a specific installment of the canon is relevant to the relationship(s) you're requesting.)
  • Where to (Legally) Find It
  • Brief Description
  • What You Love About the Canon
  • What You Love About Your Ship(s)
  • Kinds of Things You're Planning to Ask For
  • Content Notes (e.g., incest, period-typical attitudes, noncon, torture, etc. These notes are optional and may not cover everything even if they're included.)

Please post a separate comment for each promo you do, so the canon title can always be highlighted in the subject line.

Привет and welcome to our new Russian friends from LiveJournal! We are happy to offer you a new home. We will not require identification for you to post or comment. We also do not cooperate with Russian government requests for any information about your account unless they go through a United States court first. (And it hasn't happened in 16 years!)

Importing your journal from ЖЖ may be slow. There are a lot of you, with many posts and comments, and we have to limit how fast we download your information from ЖЖ so they don't block us. Please be patient! We have been watching and fixing errors, and we will go back to doing that after the holiday is over.

I am very sorry that we can't translate the site into Russian or offer support in Russian. We are a much, much smaller company than LiveJournal is, and my high school Russian classes were a very long time ago :) But at least we aren't owned by Sberbank!

С Новым Годом, and welcome home!

Thank you also to everyone who's been giving our new neighbors a warm welcome. I love you all ❤️

I keep thinking of things to post here and then not actually getting around to making the post when I'm sitting at a computer.

Never mind.  Happy New Year to you all.

A cheerful apologetic wave to those people who optimistically sent Christmas cards despite my dismal record on that front.

I shall now attempt some bullet points about things I considered posting about in December 2025 but failed to.

- Foster-kitties Tabby and Rosa went back to the rescue having put on a fair bit of weight. They had a potential home offer, but I'm not sure if that fell through, since we haven't heard any more about them.

- Instead we were asked to take in Binx, a black cat with a white tuft, and her two-week-old kittens, Gus-gus and Dumpling. They are now coming up to seven weeks old, have sprouted ridiculous long legs, and learned to climb and prance hilariously.

- The idea that Binx would teach the kittens about the litter tray did not appear to work.  However, after a few random wees, putting two very shallow litter trays in locations that the kittens had previously chosen, and plonking them in the litter trays every time we went into the room did.

- I decided that the random shoes that arrived through the post over a year ago with no name on them, which nobody in the village admitted to having ordered, had aged sufficiently that I could sell them on ebay, so I did.  (I suppose I could have donated them, but the local charity shops seem very unenthusiastic about donations, and I find I need to be feeling quite strong before I can march in and hand things to a sighing volunteer. )

- since the cold cleared and we have had quite a lot of calm, clear weather, I've been sea swimming a few times with the Hazelbeach group.  I went today, in fact, and it was the coldest swim yet: it definitely helps if you've been exercising enough to get warm before you get into the sea, even in boots, gloves and my shortie wetsuit.

- Theo completed his scentwork course, which was fun, but he clearly thought it rather easy.  There is an exam, but I'm not sure we shall bother with that.

- Went to visit my Mum; came back over the old Severn Bridge.  My family lived in Swansea till I was 12, so every holiday involved that bridge: stopping there for the first time in about 40 years was a strange, nostalgic moment.

- Mum, Theo and I went to the Christmas Tree festival at St Eustachius's.  It was a very good one. I think I voted for the tree celebrating the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, which had a really good mining chimney. For a Christmas tree, anyway.

- Pp has hurt a finger, bending it backwards in a manner that seems likely to require minor surgery to fix. In the mean time it is strapped up in a brace, which is annoying rather than painful.

- We bought Nordmann firs (one for upstairs, one for downstairs) from Pen Parc Festive Trees this year, which meant we got to trek through a chilly field and pick out the trees. They certainly seem to be holding their needles a lot better than in previous years.  Nordmann is a fine wood to carve, too, though I didn't take a chunk off to carve over the festive season.  I'll have to wait till 12th night to take my carving wood for this year's decoration.

- there are flowers on the rosemary bushes, and today I found some primroses despite the frosted ground.

We are in shock. It’s been in low 80’s and high 70’s for almost two months. Yesterday and today is damp and cloudy with 65°F. It’s finally winter. At least it’s not 20° so there is that. Happy New Year to all of you. The snowflake challenge starts tomorrow. I know I’m excited. Hugs!
