The schedule for Andor (to the tune of three episodes every Tuesday late evening for the next four weeks) means that I am in fact not staying up to midnight watching it all. This week especially I'll manage to watch an episode an evening, so I'm 100% staying off Tumblr until Thursday evening at the earliest. Dreamwidth I'm assuming will be more or less spoiler-free, possibly Discord as well. The Star Wars Discord I'm a member of is very good about spoilers and all of us are: "But we're working adults? How do they expect us to watch this?"

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

I've had this on my wishlist since it was published in 2018 - how could I not? A riff on Scooby Do?

But a grown up Scooby Gang where Fred went to Hollywood and OD'd in a motel room, Shaggy is in a mental institution because he's haunted by Fred's ghost, Velma has so many anger issues that the even military thought she was too much, and Daphne lives in an unheated tenement in Brooklyn with Scooby's great-great grandson. The whole premise is amazing.

I struggled which bingo square to use for this book. I thought it would be the crime/mystery one, and they do solve mysteries. Then I thought about using a substitution for horror/paranormal because that could also apply, but I'm a fraidy cat, and this book didn't scare me at all. I finally settled on thriller/suspense because this book reads like an action movie.

Literally. This was my biggest problem with the book - it randomly switches from paragraphs to script format, complete with stage directions. Sometimes it includes stage directions in the middle of the paragraph. It constantly breaks the fourth wall, destroying any of the tension that had built up. The author uses words that I don't recognize and that don't really fit what he's using them for. Sort of like the guy in The Glass Onion.

I also struggled to figure out how to rate it because the writing was so frustrating but the overall plot was good. There's the central mystery of centuries old pirate gold, someone accidentally raised an ancient underworld god, an army of amphibian monsters, and a scientifically plausible natural disaster. Uhhhhh it was meant to be Agatha All Along fic recs but then a Wandavision one snuck in. Anyway I keep seeing fic rec lists and going 'wow! all of those sound boring and awful and like the fics were written for a totally different show!' so I made my own. Alphabetical order by title, minimal warnings, these authors almost certainly have other good A3 fics that I didn't rec, yknow, all the Kimara Makes A Rec List staples. Weirdly weighted towards smut, to an extent I wasn't expecting.

Fic that doubles and triples and quadruples down on YES Agatha's an unrepentant mass murder and YES magic is super fucking weird and YES Rio is Death is also not human. Still a WIP so possibly will lead to regrets later, but eh, the first seven chapters are probably one of my favourite backstories for them I've seen.

I loved this book, five stars. I liked it better than an of the previous books expect Leviathan Wakes (the first book for people keeping score). I can't wait to read the final of the 9(!) books and see how this story wraps up. Then I have to decide if I want to read all the novellas and short stories that go with the series.
