Snowflake Challenge #1
Jan. 1st, 2026 08:24 amMeet the Mods Post *
Remember that there is no official deadline, so feel free to join in at any time, or go back and do challenges you've missed.
( Fandom Snowflake Challenge #1 ) And please do check out the comments for all the awesome participants of the challenge and visit their journals/challenge responses to comment on their posts and cheer them on.
And just as a reminder: this is a low pressure, fun challenge. If you aren't comfortable doing a particular challenge, then don't. We aren't keeping track of who does what.

New year
Jan. 1st, 2026 06:12 pmFor some time, I've felt like that fic writing won't come as easily to me as before, and I've allowed myself to not write if I feel like it. After S&D 2025, there was actually a month when I didn't write anything, but then I returned writing with a new chapter for my FCL-Silm crossover, and an entry for a SWG monthly challenge, Cinnamon Rolls, which is romantic fluff about Mairon/Eönwë. (I decided there are too few fics about that pairing.)
As the New Year was approaching, I felt ready to take a break from my writing hobby, content to be reading fic instead, but the SWG challenge prompts did it again: I found myself starting a new fic already today.
It's nothing much, only a short entry for one of the last year's SWG monthly challenges I can still pick as New Year's Resolution amnesty, but it's about Maedhros, whom I don't write very often even though he's one of my favourite characters, and it feels like Maedhros might give me a fresh start for this writing year.

Admin Post: Annual Amnesty Challenge: New Year's Resolution
Jan. 1st, 2026 11:24 am
A new year often brings resolutions to achieve big changes. Our Resolutions challenge is much more moderate: reach for a creative achievement, no matter how small. Maybe it is a single drabble, a sketch, or a new chapter—the point is to begin a new year with an act of creativity and imagination!
Our annual amnesty allows you to pick from any of the previous year’s challenges. You do not need to use a new prompt to be eligible for this challenge. Participants can choose to complete any of the previous year's challenges. Did you miss a challenge you wanted to complete? Do it now. Did you start a fanwork for a challenge but never completed it? Here is your chance to finish. If you didn't leave any unrealized or unfinished projects behind you (congratulations!), choose from any of our 2025 challenges and start something new.
You can find the complete amnesty challenge guidelines and a list of 2025's challenges here.
You will receive a stamp on your 2025 collection for any challenges that you complete now, as well as a stamp for the New Year's Resolution challenge on your 2026 collection. When you post to the SWG archive, please make sure you select the 2025 challenge you're completing and the New Year's Resolution challenge.
This month's banner and stamps use images from the 18th-century “Chinese Arabesques” by Jean-Baptiste Pillement and Anne Allen, which plays with the theme of striving to reach the fantastical.
In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 15 February 2026. For complete challenge guidelines, see the Challenges page on our website.

Admin Post: January Challenge
Jan. 1st, 2026 10:55 amThank you very much for your engagement with this community over the last month!
This month, I am bringing back the challenge we had in January 2023:
The thematic prompt is: "lamp or lantern".
There are many lamps in the Legendarium!
Starting from the Two Lamps, Ormal and Illuin, and the silver lamp on top of the Mindon Eldaliéva in Tirion, all the way to lamps in Lothlórien in the Lord of the Rings and onwards.
Some bonus prompts from Tolkien's verse (filched from Tolkien Gateway):
till his blue lamp magic-kindled, where flow the shadowy rills
beneath enchanted alders, found that Gate beneath the hills
(From: The Lay of the Fall of Gondolin)
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!
(From: Lord of the Rings)
O! the swinging lamps in the starlit globes
(From: Goblin Feet)
The formal challenge is a type of short poem of five lines also called "Lantern" or "Lanterne" (or "Lanturne"), because its shape is like that of a hanging lantern or lamp, when it is centre-aligned on the page.
The syllable count is 1-2-3-4-1.
Here are lanterne poems written for the challenge in January 2023:
Silmarils, by Narya:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/50308.html
Lamp, by elennalore:

Starlight, by Starspray:

Seven Lanterns, by Zdenka:

An Unexpected Find, by Anérea:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/51839.html
Waiting, by Silver Trails:
https://tolkienshortfanworks.dreamwidth.org/52831.html
As always, the two prompts can be filled entirely independently or combined with prompts from other challenges.
Usual reminder that although you can fill the prompts in any way you like, in order to post the fill to this community or to the related collection on AO3 (linked in a sticky post at the top), the fanwork can only have a word count up to 1000 words and must be linked to a Tolkien fandom.
Rec lists and podfics can be posted as fills for thematic prompts, as long as the fanworks concerned meet those conditions.
Also we continue to welcome other pieces unrelated to any challenge, of course, including cross-posts and older stories!
B2MeM planning for 2026 underway
Jan. 1st, 2026 10:45 amIt will be an anniversary year, as B2MeM started in 2006.
Signups Open!
Jan. 1st, 2026 12:02 amPlease consult the tagset for the list of fandoms and relationships you can request and offer. If you can't find a canon you nominated, make sure to check Uncategorized Fandoms, which is where fandoms will be listed if they haven't appeared on AO3 yet or if I've had to alter the canonical tag.
Important: While the Relationships field on the signup form has a dropdown that, when you start typing, should connect with the tagset, AO3 always doesn't display all nominated relationships for a fandom. If the relationship you're trying to request/offer is in the tagset but not appearing as a selection that you can make, please copy-paste it directly from tagset into your signup form. This will let the system recognize that it's the same tag.
Remember, Character A & Character B is platonic, Character A/Character B is romantic/sexual.
There's a letters post, if you want to link your letter there, and you'll also be able to browse requests either on AO3 or the app.
Signups will be open until January 7, 11:59PM EST. Please see the signup rules here.
You can comment here or contact the mod email--candyheartsex at gmail dot com--if you have any questions.

Farewell, 2025!
Dec. 31st, 2025 07:48 pmReading-wise, I was fortunate enough to pick up some real gems this year:
- I've already talked about A Canticle for Leibowitz here: it's a classic for a reason, and I think a good read for these times. Brilliant, moving, dark but never grim.
- Spiderlight, by Adrian Tchaikovsky, was recommended to me by
- I read Barbara Hambly's Windrose Chronicles books - the duology of The Silent Tower and The Silicon Mage, the sequel Dog Wizard, and Stranger at the Wedding, which isn't strictly speaking in the series but is in the same universe - and was immediately obsessed. I'd been dubious going in - '80s portal fantasy isn't something I'd have generally considered my cup of tea - but I really like a lot of Hambly's other works, so I gave it a try, and I'm so glad I did! This rocketed up the list to become one of my favorite book series ever, immediately. I love the wizard tropes, love the themes Hambly explores here (some of which are familiar from others of her books), and I even - unusually for me - really enjoy the romance between the protagonists, who are two extremely intelligent and pretty strange individuals meeting, perhaps for the first time, someone else who is operating on the same wavelength.
- Better late than never - this year was the first time I read anything by Jane Austen! I read Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion, at Fiona's urging, and definitely preferred the latter. (The yearning! Marvelous!)
- Other highlights included Ann Leckie's Translation State, which was excellent and may be my favorite Leckie yet, and Le Guin's short story collection The Compass Rose, out of which I loved best "The Author of the Acacia Seeds" and "Mazes."
I didn't write much this year - outside of work, at least. I posted two fics, one for the Silmarillion and one for Star Wars, both as part of exchanges and both written before I transferred to my current bureau in mid-May, so to the extent I predicted I might be writing more after the switch, I was wrong; the same goes for being more active here on DW. The day job has just kept me really busy, but it's the good, worthwhile kind of busyness.
So farewell, 2025, with gratitude for the good things you brought. And here's to the new year: May it be kinder than the last.
Fandom/Relationship Promo Post
Dec. 31st, 2025 08:24 pmHow you write your your recommendations, enthusiastic squeeing, or manifestos is up to you, but please put the name of your canon in the subject line of your comment. Here--with liberal borrowing from Yuletide's promo setup--are some other things you may want to include:
- Title
- Medium (e.g., Book Series, Podcast, TV Show, etc.)
- Approximate Length (e.g., page count, runtime, etc. This is also a good place to mention if only a specific installment of the canon is relevant to the relationship(s) you're requesting.)
- Where to (Legally) Find It
- Brief Description
- What You Love About the Canon
- What You Love About Your Ship(s)
- Kinds of Things You're Planning to Ask For
- Content Notes (e.g., incest, period-typical attitudes, noncon, torture, etc. These notes are optional and may not cover everything even if they're included.)
Please post a separate comment for each promo you do, so the canon title can always be highlighted in the subject line.
Привет! LiveJournal imports may be slow
Dec. 31st, 2025 08:24 pmПривет and welcome to our new Russian friends from LiveJournal! We are happy to offer you a new home. We will not require identification for you to post or comment. We also do not cooperate with Russian government requests for any information about your account unless they go through a United States court first. (And it hasn't happened in 16 years!)
Importing your journal from ЖЖ may be slow. There are a lot of you, with many posts and comments, and we have to limit how fast we download your information from ЖЖ so they don't block us. Please be patient! We have been watching and fixing errors, and we will go back to doing that after the holiday is over.
I am very sorry that we can't translate the site into Russian or offer support in Russian. We are a much, much smaller company than LiveJournal is, and my high school Russian classes were a very long time ago :) But at least we aren't owned by Sberbank!
С Новым Годом, and welcome home!
Thank you also to everyone who's been giving our new neighbors a warm welcome. I love you all ❤️
