Dear creator,

So, fandom has a hair themed exchange now...I love it! And I am very excited to see what you have in store.

I have never done an exchange where requests aren't organised by fandom, so to make things easier if you're just skimming this letter, the fandoms I have requested for this exchange are as follows:

  • The Silmarillion
  • The Lord of the Rings
  • The Hobbit
  • The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
  • The Story of Kullervo
  • Crossovers (all requested crossovers feature at least one Tolkien canon)

I've tried to group my requests together in a way that makes sense, but if the combination of character and freeform tags that we've matched on suggests something different to you than my tentative attempts at theming, then please just follow your heart and have fun.

Given the short turnaround time for this exchange and the low word count minimum, I'm not going to go into a massive list of everything I love to see in every possible type of fanwork (though my Gen Freeform and Smut4Smut letters have my most up to date lists, if you're interested). I have a short list of DNWs (see below) and as long as you stay out of those, I'm sure I will love whatever you're inspired to make. All requests are for either fanart or fanfic.

DNWs

Focus on bodily functions and fluids (exception: blood from injuries); focus on pregnancy, babies or childbirth; heavy/lifestyle BDSM; unrequested AU that significantly changes the canon setting, e.g. A/B/O, mermaid AU (canon divergence is fine, as is post-canon exploration.)

The Ainur Request

Exploration of what the Ainur look like when they take physical form? Thingol the monster-fucker?

I'm here for unusual tag combinations as well – Galadriel accidentally turning her hair into snakes, perhaps? A Medusa myth reworking could be fascinating for her, given her canonical link to mirrors...

Characters/Ships: Galadriel/Melian (Silmarillion – JRRT); Melian/Thingol (Silmarillion – JRRT); Nessa (Silmarillion - Tolkien)/Medusa (Greek Mythology); Nessa/Vána (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Arien (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Uinen (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Varda (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Yavanna (Silmarillion - JRRT)

Dwarves; Elves; Hobbits and Entwives; Men

I'm here for the worldbuilding with these requests – what hairstyles mean to the different cultures, passing traditions between generations, educating members of other races/species about their customs, or just slice of life with hair as a focus. If you're doing art, then visual representations of any of the tags would be amazing!

(Im)mortality and Identity

This is perhaps my oddest bucket of requests and I had to think a bit about why I feel these characters and ships go with each other, and with these tags. I think it's because these characters are all tied in some way to having to choose where you belong, and/or to an awareness of not belonging, often because of the different fates of Elves and Men. (Dorian and Maglor are a bit of an exception, as two immortals, but Dorian was mortal to begin with, and both of them have to deal with living forever in a world where everyone around them will die.) If you could somehow link all that back to characters taking care of each others' hair, or how they choose to style it, that would be amazing.

Characters/Ships: Aegnor/Andreth (Silmarillion – JRRT); Beleg/Túrin (Silmarillion – JRRT); Celebrimbor (Silmarillion)/Hector (Castlevania – Netflix); Celebrimbor (Silmarillion) & Hector (Castlevania – Netflix); Celebrimbor & Elrond & Elros & Gil-galad (Silmarillion – JRRT); Celebrimbor & Elros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Dorian Gray (Penny Dreadful)/Maglor (Silmarillion); Elrond & Elros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Fíriel & Elves (TAoTB – JRRT); Gil-galad & Celebrimbor (Silmarillion – JRRT); Gil-galad & Elrond (Silmarillion – JRRT); Gil-galad & Elrond & Elros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Maglor & Original Character (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Celebrimbor (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Elros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Gil-galad (Silmarillion - JRRT)

Fay and Faerie Things

Basically where I've put the tags with the most fairy tale potential.

If you happen to pick the Wanona tag, I'd love it if she could survive...

Tales of (Dis)Tress

Characters with famous hair - what's the story behind the stories? Celegorm the Fair, for example...maybe his hair turned white from some horrific encounter? After all, who knows what lurks in Oromë's woods...

You could take the “source of power” prompt literally – a Samson-esque reimagining of Glorfindel's tale, perhaps? Or it could work well for Galadriel, and would certainly explain why Fëanor wanted her hair! Or you could make it figurative, e.g. Fingon taking comfort and confidence from his braids – was it Maedhros who did his hair like that for the first time?

Characters/Ships: Fëanor & Galadriel (Silmarillion – JRRT); Fingon/Finrod (Silmarillion – JRRT); Fingon/Finrod/Maedhros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Fingon/Maedhros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Celegorm (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Fingon (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Galadriel (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Glorfindel (Silmarillion – JRRT); Solo: Maedhros (Silmarillion - JRRT)

Freeform Tags: A is unexpectedly very good at styling hair, styles B's ornately, B wears it all day; character's canonically long locks; Character's hair glows when using powers; Character's hair goes white from trauma; Giving strands of hair to show love; Hair is the source of someone's power; Long Red Hair; magical hair that glows when they sing; Silmarillion: The Gold In Fingon's Braids; The sun catching character's hair and making it glow; Tolkien: Fëanor's desire for Galadriel's hair; Tolkien: Glorfindel's Hair Pre & Post Balrog

Ships Ahoy

An excuse (as if it were needed) for hair-centric smutty or shippy goodness. Pick a tag, pick a ship, enjoy. (As with the Fay and Faerie request, I would love Wanona to live. Or Beleg and Túrin. Or any of the Finwions who die in canon. Angst and tragedy are great too but I am definitely down with canon divergence where more people survive!)

Characters/Ships: Aegnor/Andreth (Silmarillion – JRRT); Aldarion/Erendis (Silmarillion – JRRT); Beleg/Túrin (Silmarillion – JRRT); Celebrían/Elrond (LOTR – JRRT); Celebrimbor (Silmarillion)/Hector (Castlevania – Netflix); Círdan/Lalwen (Silmarillion – JRRT); Daughter of Arwen/Daughter of Éowyn (LotR – JRRT); Dorian Gray (Penny Dreadful)/Maglor (Silmarillion); Elladan/Elrohir (LotR – JRRT); Fingon/Finrod (Silmarillion – JRRT); Fingon/Finrod/Maedhros (Silmarillion – JRRT); Finwë/Ingwë (Silmarillion – JRRT); Finwë/Míriel Þerindë (Silmarillion – JRRT); Goldberry (LotR - Tolkien)/Nellas (Silmarillion); Goldberry/Lady of the Blue Brooch (LotR – JRRT); Lúthien (Silmarillion - Tolkien)/Rapunzel (Rapunzel - Fairy Tale); Wanona/The Blue Robed Lady of the Forest (SoK - JRRT)
