Challenge #14: In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) What makes it particularly appealing for you? What do you like in fanworks featuring that trope?

I really had to think hard about this, because I thought my tastes were quite wide-ranging, but there are some common threads. I like fic that hurts me, and makes me laugh, and makes me think, and makes me believe in the world it's set in. Preferably all of those things in one story. I like authors who understand language and can use it in ways that make me go "oh! Why didn't I think of that?" I like hauntings (literal and metaphorical), and the juxtaposition of the everyday with the mythical and magical. I like groups of disparate people finding their way to each other, working together, learning to care about each other - even (especially) if it's in strange, complicated ways.

I'd struggle to unpick exactly why I like all those things, except perhaps that they're all elements that run through Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, which is my oldest and deepest fannish love.

In your own space, create a fanwork. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Not strictly written *for* this challenge, but I polished and posted it today, so I'm counting it!

Stones and Shadows. On their journey to Britannia, Maglor and Felix encounter an old and unusual structure.  Gen; 197 words; rated G; no warnings.

I'm not a great fan of saying hi to people or doing nice things just because there's a challenge out there that says I should. I was going to skip these, but I've already met some lovely new people via Snowflake posts so I suppose that satisfies Day 5. As for Day 12's act of kindness, I volunteered to go down to Manchester for the day to help my old team with something. I didn't strictly *have* to; I could have taken the slopey shoulders approach and decided it wasn't my problem any more, but I like my old team a lot and it felt like the right thing to do.

For my pains, I had the train journey from hell back to Edinburgh - five and a half hours instead of three - but on the plus side it meant I finally had time to read [personal profile] bunn 's wonderful Rexque Futurus (BBC's Merlin and Arthur adventuring in 21st century England, with a healthy side dose of dragons, linguistics and snark).  I also wrote a couple of snippets in response to combinations left on my new year prompt meme, so hopefully I can get those typed up and polished over the weekend.

And I got home eventually, and had a very late supper of prawns, brie and radishes. All in all, it could have been worse.

Dear Creator,

Hi!

I'm so excited we're a match; I love the concept of this exchange, and I can't wait to see what you come up with. Worldbuilding is a huge geeky obsession of mine, so I'm sure I'll love whatever you're inspired to make.

General Stuff

Given the focus of this exchange, I'm not going to go into a massive list of things I love to see in shippy or smutty fanworks (although I'm open to receiving it unless there's a fandom-specific DNW in my signup that says otherwise. If you do want inspiration in that direction, I put some ideas in my Smut Swap and Chocolate Box exchange letters). Please don't read anything into the length of the prompts, or whether I've requested or written a certain fandom or character before; if it's in my signup, I'd love to receive it.

I've added in a list of things I love that seem vaguely relevant to this exchange, but as always, if you're inspired to do something different then please ignore all of this and follow your heart; I don't want this to be stressful, life's tricky enough without making fandom hard too. (And feel free to take fic prompts and turn them into art, make fic out of the meta prompts, create illustrated meta, swap things around and blur the boundaries wherever you like.)

AKA the self-rec thing. These are all genfic and star Maglor, Celegorm, or both - I'm nothing if not predictable. They should all work as standalones.

This year I finished The Ways of Paradox, a novel about Maglor living in modern day Scotland. It's narrated by his friend Claire James, a postgraduate student at the University of St Andrews who starts to get to know Maglor when they appear in a production of The Pirates of Penzance together. The premise sounds a little silly, and yes, there is humour, but it also has its fair share of melancholy moments and a couple of scenes I found genuinely upsetting to write (all warned for in the AO3 tags). It's not particularly plotty or pacy, and the town is (deliberately) as much of a character as Maglor, Claire and their friends. 133k words; rated M for language and said upsetting scenes.

In terms of shorter fics, I was really happy with my Darkest Night fic, Fire on the Mountain, which I wrote for [personal profile] independence1776 . Maglor is caught in the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, and faces a fight for survival. Also stars a cast of OCs I'd like to write more about, one day. 5k words; rated T for peril and non-graphic descriptions of injuries.

I also have a soft spot for What's in a Name?, a cracky drabble featuring a reborn Celegorm. Rated G; 100 words exactly.

Finally, since I was moaning about lack of content for the smaller Tolkien canons, I'm going to mention the two Silmarillion/Father Christmas Letters crossovers I wrote this year:

The Elf Who Saved Christmas, written for [personal profile] bunn for TRSB19. Maglor leads a quiet life as a Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. When his scars begin to hurt on one damp November evening, the last thing he expects is to find a letter on his desk summoning him to a mysterious meeting - a letter signed only with an initial, and bearing a stamp from the North Pole... T for peril and potentially upsetting imagery; 9k words.

Snow Bears, written for [personal profile] elwinfortuna for Innumerable Stars. A hunting trip in the mountains goes awry, and Celegorm finds himself responsible for a trio of bear cubs. Guest appearance by the Great Bear from the FC Letters. Rated G; warning for animal death; 4k words.

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

Last year I believe I wished for fic/art/podfic of my fic, and I have been absolutely spoiled with that this year - more is always welcome but I don't think I can fairly wish/ask for it!

I think the only thing might be an event specifically dedicated to the smaller Tolkien canons. Innumerable Stars is/was the best place to request them in exchanges, we are open to them in TRSB, and I periodically (hopefully) nominate them for multifandom swaps, but it could be fun to give them their own fest - possibly with Middle-earth crossovers allowed, to increase participation, as long as one or more of the smaller canons played a significant role in the fic or art produced.

Challenge #4: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Goals...hmm.  Last year I made a long, long list and I didn't even hit half of them - which is fine, I said at the time it wasn't a stick to beat myself with, and I did not expect to be moving to Scotland in 2019, which threw a lot of things out of kilter.  Even so, let's be a little more realistic this year.

Fannish

1) Co-mod the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang again.

2) Take part in the following fandom exchanges:

  • Chocolate Box
  • Worldbuilding Exchange
  • Every Woman
  • Darkest Night
  • Innumerable Stars (if it runs for 2020)

I may do others if time and energy levels permit (Hurt/Comfort Exchange and Trick or Treat are on the reserve list) but I don't want to over-commit and burn myself out.

3) Work on Summer's Song and The City Over the Mountains.  I will almost certainly write other things too, but those are my priorities from a longfic perspective.

Personal

1) Drink more water, instead of automatically reaching for fizzy drinks.

2) Keep a list of the books I read through the year.

3) Learn basic Gaelic. (I've made a start but I'm at the very, very early stages of this.  By the end of the year I'd like to be able to construct actual sentences, use tenses properly etc.)

Hello and welcome! I'm Narya – bi; she/her; writer, bookworm, fan, gamer and geek.  I like people.

I also exist over at Tumblr and Pillowfort (I really need to get better at using that site). I post moodboards and manips at DeviantArt, periodically trawl for aesthetic inspiration on Pinterest, and am active on the Silmarillion Writers' Guild Discord.

I was born in Yorkshire but I now live in Scotland. I have a busy “career” type job with more than full time hours, but when I can, I write, read, or retreat to the sea or the hills. I've been hanging out in the Tolkien fandom for going on fourteen years now (I am a Fandom Old, though I was a naïve teenage baby when I started). My uncle introduced me to the Bakshi cartoon when I was a tot; I read LOTR when I was still fairly young, the Silm when I was a bit older, and I never looked back. I both write and read fic, mostly about Elves, though I like or at least am interested in most of the canon characters.  I also love to read and write OCs, and I enjoy reading non-Tolkien fic, though I rarely write it and almost never post it.  Non-Tolkien fannish interests include:

  • The MCU
  • Narnia
  • Star Wars
  • Star Trek
  • Castlevania
  • Doctor Who
  • Mushishi
  • Penny Dreadful
  • Firefly
  • Downton Abbey
  • The Hollow Crown
  • Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire
  • Dragonriders of Pern
  • The Old Kingdom
  • Folklore and Mythology (including British, Greek, Roman, Norse and Mesopotamian)
  • The Forgotten Realms
  • A bunch of smaller fandoms based on individual books, films, short stories, plays, fairy tales, poems, songs, games, works of art and other things.

My Fic

My main, mostly Noldor-centric 'verse lives here on AO3. Mostly my fics are canon-based, if not strictly canon-compliant (I pick, choose and blend the versions of canon that I like best; I stretch, bend and extrapolate beyond established canon fact; I treat LACE as an optional extra) and run from pre-First Age all the way through to modern times.  The stories are listed in chronological order as far as possible, and for the most part they stand alone – though if that isn't the case, the story notes or summary will say so.

I also co-write the Summerland series with Spiced Wine, a crossover between my modern Maglor story The Ways of Paradox and her Dark Prince/Magnificat AU.

I write original fiction too, but like my non-Tolkien fic, I rarely talk about it and never post it.

My Journal

Mostly I use Dreamwidth to keep in touch with my fandom friends. I try to post links to my fic when I remember, but I'm not good at doing this consistently.  Personal stuff is locked to my access list (and may also be restricted to a filter, depending on how personal it is); fannish stuff may also be f-locked if it's just wittering, or bits of drafts, but links to finished works will be public.

Other things posted publicly are my 'Poem of the Week' posts, which (when I'm doing them) go up on Mondays, 'Dear Creator' letters, and the results of my kitchen experiments.

Friending

If you follow me I will most likely follow you back, as long as you seem like a nice person and not a troll or a bigot.  If it's not obvious how we know each other, I'd appreciate a DM or a comment on here to say hi :)

Commenting

Comments are welcome, including single word responses and emojis. Equally, you're welcome to stay quiet if you're more comfortable doing so.

One caveat – my job is stressful. Fandom is my happy place. I don't do discourse, drama or arguments, and I will step away if things look to be heading in that direction.

Transformative Works

If anyone wants to translate, remix, make art, podfic etc. that's absolutely fine - just tell me so I can get excited about it and promote/reblog your creations! Please note, though, that this does not extend to writing spitefic, parody, or feeding my fanworks into any kind of generative AI programme.

Events and Communities

I moderate the [community profile] hidden_paths event, a low-pressure annual celebration of the smaller Tolkien canons.

I had a sort-of admin role at Faerie, a small Tolkien archive which was my fandom home for a long time, and is now sadly defunct.  I also cross-post fic to the Silmarillion Writers' Guild.  From time to time I run fanfiction book clubs on the Silmarillion Writers' Guild Discord.

I love exchanges and prompt fests.  A few favourites:

  • My Slashy Valentine, a hand matched slash fiction exchange focused on the people of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
  • Innumerable Stars, a low-commitment, low pressure fic and art exchange inclusive of all things Tolkien (books, movieverse, game canons, and more).
  • The Tolkien Short Fanworks community, which is exactly what it says on the tin - a DW community for the posting of very short texts from all Tolkien fandoms (word count up to 1000 words, especially 500 words or less).  There are optional monthly prompts and formal challenges, though all short form texts are welcome.  I've found some lovely pieces and writers here.
  • The Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang, which involves authors writing long-ish fic (5k words minimum) in response to an artist's prompt. The prompt should be based on one or more of Tolkien's works.  I am slightly biased about this one as I was one of the founding mods; I stepped down in 2022 but intend to keep taking part as a writer and maybe an artist.
  • Tolkien Secret Santa, a fandom-wide gift exchange inspired by the season of giving and celebrating. Everyone who participates gets to make and receive a little digital present from their Secret Santa, which could take any number of forms: a fic, a playlist, an artwork, a poem, a graphic…

Other

I'm married, I play the cello, I love Italy, I speak decent French and a little Scottish Gaelic, I have a soft spot for a dram of good whisky, I'm a football fan (my team is Leeds United), and I giggle at anything.

I have an enormous cat also. (“He is the size of a sheep, as majestic as a snow leopard, and the colour of Irn Bru.” - a dear friend.)

Dear Chocolatier,

Hi and happy 2020!

I'm very excited that you're going to be making a gift for me. If you've browsed my AO3 profile you'll have seen that I'm mainly active in the Tolkien fandom, BUT I lurk in a number of other fandoms and I enjoy all sorts of fic and art; please don't read anything into the length of the prompts, or whether I've requested or written a certain fandom or relationship before.

I tried to theme my requests at least vaguely, but this has still ended up as a bit of a grab bag. If there's a unifying thread, it's complications – unexpected connections, love affairs between mortals and immortals, friendships between members of different cultures or even across opposing sides of a conflict, war and politics changing and fracturing relationships, sentient objects and locations whispering in the ears of their owners and inhabitants...

Most of my prompts are fic-related as I am not at all artistic, but if we've matched on art, then honestly, I will love anything with any of the character combinations I've requested. If we've matched on fic, then please don't feel bound to the ideas here – they're suggestions only.

I'm bisexual.

Until today I could count the number of people who know on one hand. I'm married to a cishet man and I've never had a relationship with a woman. I didn't want to deal with people asking me, "are you sure? How do you really know?" I was scared I wasn't entitled to my identity. I hated the idea that people might think I was putting it on for attention, or to feel special, or that it was "just a phase."

It's not a phase. I've known, deep down, since I was sixteen. I'm going to be thirty in January and it's time to be a big girl and call myself what I am.

I'm bi. I'm not scared any more.

Happy Coming Out Day <3

I got two gifts, and I absolutely adore them!  Thank you, lovely writers, whoever you are <3

Linking the fics below; they're very different but I thoroughly recommend both of them, please go and enjoy!  They're perfect for a chilly autumn evening.

Without a Word

Haunted by the past two years of his life, Maglor returns to the home he vanished from.

A bittersweet and delicately disturbing modern day Maglor story.  Rated T.

A Last Adventure

Just what kinds of trouble might the adventurous Belladonna Took have got herself into, to make Gandalf remember her so fondly?

A Tookish twist on the classic haunted house tale.  The perfect blend of cosy and spooky.  Rated G.

 Dear Creator,

Hi! Thank you for making a gift for me; I'm really excited to see what you come up with.

There's no real theme to my selections, other than “characters I love/find interesting/want to see more of.” I'd be equally delighted to receive something about any of them, and I enjoy fanwork content of all genres and ratings – portraits, comics, mood boards, fluff, gen, angst, smut, vignettes, darkfic, horror, it's all good. Honestly, if you stay out of my DNWs, you can't go wrong.

I've included a list of likes and prompts below as I know a lot of people prefer to have them, but if these don't appeal then feel free to junk the whole set and follow your muse. I don't want this to be stressful and this letter is in no way intended as a shopping list. (Also please feel free to take fic prompts and turn them into art, combine prompts, swap things around and blur the boundaries wherever you like.)

Dear Writer,

Hi! It's the height of summer here but I'm already excited for autumn – cooler weather, comfort food, and of course a good dose of dark and scary fiction to pass the lengthening nights.

I love fic that deals with difficult themes, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what you'll write. The tag set was amazing and it was really tough to narrow down. I'd be equally thrilled with anything about any of the tags and characters I've selected so please don't read anything into the length of the prompts, or whether I've requested the characters before.

I haven't included tons of shippy/smutty prompts here because most of the tags I've picked out are focussed around horror, injuries and supernatural goings-on, but if you do want inspiration in that direction, my Smut Swap and Fandom Growth Exchange letters both have some character-agnostic likes and ideas.

All prompts and scenarios below are 100% optional and intended for inspiration only, so please go in a different direction if that's what your story wants to do. Also feel free to combine prompts, if it works – for example, Maglor finding Amroth by the sea shore.

These are all fic requests, but art, edits, fanmixes etc. as treats are more than welcome!

Hi! It's time to explore some fandom roads less travelled. I love minor characters, new perspectives and relationships that aren't frequently explored, so I can't wait to see what you come up with.
